{"id":7,"date":"2010-07-21T20:05:02","date_gmt":"2010-07-21T20:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/bjmsite\/?page_id=7"},"modified":"2024-06-30T16:44:22","modified_gmt":"2024-06-30T16:44:22","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cassidylaidlaw.com\/bjmsite\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Research<\/h2>\n<p>My research is focused on creating computer graphics techniques for producing imagery that increases effective visual communication through use of aesthetic and artistic methods.\u00a0 These techniques will build on approaches used by artists working with traditional media.\u00a0 I am interested in artistic rendering (sometimes called non-photorealistic rendering) as both an interactive process for drawing textures\u00a0 and as a rendering process for 2d and 3d animation. \u00a0In the past, I researched methods and built tools that allow users to quickly\u00a0experiment with color palettes within the context of composing imagery.<\/p>\n<h2>Projects and Papers<\/h2>\n<h3>Painterly Rendering for Animation<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassidylaidlaw.com\/bjmsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/hay1.png\" alt=\"Painterly Rendering Haystack\" \/><\/p>\n<div>The painterly renderer was developed for an earlier version of the Beethoven&#8217;s Fifth piece in <em>Fantasia 2000<\/em>. It renders 3d geometry with screen-space paintbrush images. The color, orientation, and size of strokes is determined by reference images.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Wysiwyg NPR<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassidylaidlaw.com\/bjmsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tea_grid.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>This system lets a designer directly draw on\u00a0a 3D model with strokes, imparting a personal aesthetic to the object. The artist\u00a0chooses a brush style, then draws strokes over the model<\/div>\n<div>from one or more viewpoints. When the system renders\u00a0the scene from any new viewpoint, it adapts the number\u00a0and placement of the strokes appropriately to maintain the\u00a0original look.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Graftals<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassidylaidlaw.com\/bjmsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/truffula.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Graftals, or graphic texture elements, are a way to create the look of complex textures such as grass or fur in interactive stroke-based illustrations without representing them explicitly.
